Vanguard–U of T Computer Science partnership: from graduate talent to home-grown enterprise AI systems

Vanguard’s approach with enterprise AI solutions is shaped by its commitment to investors. By combining rigorous research with strong standards for reliability and governance, Vanguard is focusing on building advanced AI designed to support investors at scale.

“In a business where every decision can affect someone’s life, we are always thinking about how to build home-grown, enterprise-grade AI systems that meet the highest standards of testing and validation for our clients,” says Jithin Pradeep, director of enterprise AI research at Vanguard.

That commitment to building trustworthy AI for clients led Vanguard to the University of Toronto (U of T).

In 2019, the company began working with graduate students through U of T’s Master of Science in Applied Computing (MScAC), a distinctive program that embeds graduate students inside partner organizations for eight months to work on applied research projects shaped by industry needs. What started as a small set of projects has grown into a long-term research partnership focused on building and evaluating enterprise AI systems.

Together, Vanguard and U of T have developed speech-recognition systems, built language models tuned to internal context and terminology, and advanced research that moves from experimentation into reliable use across the organization — practical capabilities focused on enhancing the client experience as well as outcomes

“Working with U of T gives us a brain trust. It helps us ask the right questions up front and choose our direction with intent,” says Jing Wang, principal of the Center for AI and Insights at Vanguard. “We choose every project because it can strengthen the services we provide to investors, whether that’s clearer conversations, more personalized guidance, or faster responses when they need our help.”

Vanguard–U of T partnership grows into a research lab

The partnership deepened when the first cohort of four U of T interns joined Vanguard as scientists, forming the foundation of its current enterprise AI research arm. This team has since grown to more than 40 specialists, with a strong presence in Toronto and collaborators across the United States and India.

In 2025, Vanguard and the University of Toronto’s collaboration expanded into a formal research lab, giving Vanguard’s team the ability to work directly with world-renowned faculty and graduate students on frontier AI research that extends beyond individual internships. Current projects span trustworthy and responsible AI, autonomous AI systems, cognitive AI, and advanced language-model training, with a consistent focus on aligning with Vanguard’s governance, risk, and compliance standards.

“What started as a small group of interns has become an engine for exploring how groundbreaking research can inform home-grown enterprise-grade AI capabilities across Vanguard,” says Pradeep. “The lab lets us explore ambitious ideas with U of T and bring the best of them into our systems in a disciplined, investor-focused way in service of clients’ needs.”

One early area of impact has been speech recognition. Off-the-shelf tools struggled with the firm’s domain-specific language, producing high error rates. Through joint research, Vanguard and U of T reduced word-error rates in select internal testing scenarios. For clients, this could translate into improved service, with more personalized, reliable follow-ups and faster identification of pain points.

“This partnership provides Vanguard with access to top U of T researchers and highly trained graduate talent,” says Eyal de Lara, professor and chair of U of T’s Department of Computer Science. “And for our students and faculty, it provides the opportunity to work on real industry challenges and help shape how AI is integrated responsibly in financial services.”

Training graduate talent for real‑world computing

Widely recognized as the birthplace of modern deep learning, the university has been at the forefront of AI and machine learning research for decades. Its Department of Computer Science is consistently ranked among the top computer science departments globally and number one in Canada.

The MScAC is a flagship program within the department. Launched in 2010 with an initial cohort of six students, it has since grown to 120 students per year, while maintaining a highly competitive admissions bar. Advanced coursework is followed by an eight-month applied research placement, where interns work on challenges defined directly by industry partners.

MScAC interns design solutions across healthcare, education, finance, manufacturing and housing, drawing on advanced computing approaches including AI, computational biology, and quantum computing. Examples of projects include a partnership with Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, where MScAC researchers developed an AI-driven approach to detecting lymphoma early through non-invasive blood tests. And at TVO, students built an adaptive educational testing system that personalizes learning in real time.

Building an innovation ecosystem

This collaborative model is building a strong pipeline of highly skilled talent while fueling innovation across sectors.

In addition to the many students hired on after their internships, longer‑term research labs are supporting sustained, research-driven advances, as seen in the Vanguard partnership. Another example is the recent launch of the AMD-U of T Research Lab. After working with several MScAC interns, the global leader in high‑performance computing will pursue 100 projects with U of T faculty and graduate students over three years to advance next‑generation AI and computing.

“These university-industry partnerships are driving our innovation ecosystem and enhancing productivity across our economy,” says de Lara. “To be competitive, we need more than capital. We need highly skilled people doing the work: building systems, testing ideas and refining them as they scale.”
