Maclean’s ‘Top 10 AI Trailblazers’ list recognizes U of T CS faculty and alumni

Department of Computer Science faculty and alumni are among a group of trailblazers dubbed by Maclean’s as “innovators and iconoclasts placing Canada at the forefront of artificial intelligence.”

Earlier this month, the magazine unveiled its annual ‘Power List’ highlighting 100 Canadians shaping the country. The magazine noted that during the pandemic, “artificial intelligence evolved from the stuff of movie magic into big business.”

Topping the list's ‘Top 10 AI Trailblazers’ category are the founders of Toronto-based natural language processing startup, Cohere. Alumni Aidan Gomez and Nick Frosst, along with former U of T CS student Ivan Zhang, are recognized for “creating a smarter, friendlier chatbot.”

University of Toronto luminary Geoffrey Hinton is named alongside Yoshua Bengio for “helping make Canada a global hub for AI research” and Professor Raquel Urtasun, founder and CEO of self-driving vehicle company Waabi, is highlighted for her work “training real vehicles in a virtual world.”
