A Department of Computer Science PhD student conducting research at the intersection of machine learning and health care has been awarded a 2021 Apple Scholars in AI/ML PhD fellowship.
Sana Tonekaboni, a member of the machine learning group at U of T and the Vector Institute, is interested in overcoming barriers to adoption of AI in clinical settings. Her research is in machine learning for health care and focuses on explainability and unsupervised representation learning for medical time series. She is supervised by Associate Professor Anna Goldenberg.
Fellowship recipients were selected based on “their innovative research, their record as thought leaders and collaborators in their fields, and their unique commitment to take risks and push the envelope in machine learning and AI,” according to Apple.
