Visual computing researcher to join Department of Computer Science faculty in 2022

David Lindell, an accomplished researcher working at the intersection of machine learning, computational imaging, and computer vision, will join the Department of Computer Science as an assistant professor in July 2022.

Lindell is currently a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University’s Computational Imaging Lab. His research combines optics, emerging sensor platforms, machine learning, and physics-based algorithms to enable new capabilities in visual computing.

In a 2019 TEDx talk, Lindell explains computational imaging systems that could help self-driving cars see around corners.

He received his PhD from Stanford University, where he was a Stanford Graduate Fellow, and he also received the ACM SIGGRAPH Outstanding Dissertation Honorable Mention Award.

“I'm thrilled to join esteemed colleagues and amazing, talented students in the Department of Computer Science at U of T,” says Lindell. “I look forward to meeting you next year and contributing to a culture of world-class education and research.”

Lindell's arrival will bolster the Department's internationally renowned research in the areas of computer vision and machine learning.

Future graduate students with interests related to imaging, optics, signal processing, and machine learning are invited to apply to join his research group at U of T. Interested students can apply directly to the Department of Computer Science once applications open in early October.
