Department Awarded IBM Community Grant

For the second time, the Department of Computer Science has been awarded an IBM Community Grant in recognition of department volunteer, Julie Chan (BSc 1982). Julie, an Executive Project Manager and Business Development Executive for IBM Canada, applied for the grant on behalf of the department.

IBM applauds Julie for her volunteer involvement, and recognizes she is providing value as a mentor in computer science’s Career Mentorship Program. Julie volunteers at numerous Faculty of Arts & Science Backpack to Briefcase (b2B) events and has hosted mentorship dinners between undergraduates and alumni. The department previously received an IBM Community Grant in 2015, also for Julie’s volunteerism.

Julie was recognized with an Arbor Award, the university’s highest honour for volunteers, in 2014. She continues to inspire others, including her own mentees, to become mentors.

The purpose of the grant is to support the purchase of equipment needed by computer science. This year’s grant will be used to purchase new virtual reality hardware for CSC404: Video Game Design.

Thank you Julie and IBM!
