Students in CMP1 Admission Category
CMP1 admission details
Students in the CMP1 admissions category have guaranteed admission to some programs provided they meet a set of requirements within 12 months of beginning their studies in CMP1 — please see below.
Guaranteed admission to CS Specialist (ASSPE1689), CS Major (ASMAJ1689) and CS Minor (ASMIN1689)
Students admitted to Arts & Science in the Year 1 Computer Science (CMP1) admission category are guaranteed admission to these programs provided they meet these requirements within 12 months of beginning their studies in CMP1:
Complete at least 4.0 full course equivalents (FCE)
Complete CSC110Y1 with a minimum mark of 70%
Complete CSC111H1 with a minimum mark of 77% for the Specialist or Major or 70% for the Minor
Request the program on ACORN during the first program request period. (In ACORN, you will see an option to request programs with these codes along with program codes ending in “X”. Please select the program codes without the X.)
Conditions must be met within twelve months of the student's enrolment in Arts & Science. If these conditions are not met within twelve months, the Admission Guarantee is withdrawn. If you do not complete the CS Admission Guarantee's requirements in your first year of study, you may choose an alternate path to apply for a Computer Science program as described on the students from other admission categories page, or may choose to pursue another program of study in Arts & Science. If you are in this situation, we encourage you to discuss your options with an academic advisor at your college Registrar's Office and/or the Computer Science Undergraduate Office.
Competitive admission to Data Science Specialist (ASSPE1687)
The Data Science Specialist (ASSPE1687) is a program offered jointly between the Departments of Computer Science and Statistical Sciences.
The Computer Science Admission Guarantee does not apply to the Data Science Specialist; however, at least 20 spaces in the program will be available each year for students applying from Year 1 Computer Science (CMP1).
To be eligible to apply, CMP1 students must:
Complete at least 4.0 full course equivalents (FCE)
Complete CSC110Y1 with a final mark of at least 70%
Complete CSC111H1 with a final mark of at least 77%
Complete MAT137Y1/MAT157Y1 with a final mark of at least 70%
Complete STA130H1/STA261H* with a final mark of at least 70%
Request the program on ACORN during the first program request period. (In ACORN, you will see an option to request programs with these codes along with program codes ending in “X”. Please select the program codes without the X.)
* Students are strongly encouraged to take STA130H1 in their first year. STA261H1 will be used in place of STA130H1 for program admission purposes if a student has not completed STA130H1 or if they have completed both STA130H1 and STA261H1 by the time they are being considered for admission.
Important Note: Achieving the minimum grade in CSC110Y1, CSC111H1, MAT137Y1/MAT157Y1 and STA130H1/STA261H1 does not guarantee admission to the Data Science Specialist (ASSPE1687). The marks needed for entry change each year depending on available spaces and the number of applicants.
I'm a CMP1 student - what if I don't meet the requirements of the admission guarantee?
CSC110Y1 and CSC111H1 are only offered once per year. Because the Admission Guarantee's requirements must be met within one year of your enrolment into Arts & Science, these courses may not be repeated for the purpose of meeting the guarantee's requirements.
In exceptional circumstances representing severe disruption to a student’s first year, students may request special consideration to extend this time limit (normally by up to an additional 12 months). These extensions are granted only in exceptional circumstances in which there are no other provisions for academic support and special consideration available to the student (such provisions may include, e.g., advising, coursework extensions or reweighting, petitions, etc.). Circumstances where an extension might be required might include, for example, extended hospitalization or severe family or personal disruption.
The student is expected to explore all possible avenues to address their concerns prior to submitting an extension request, normally in consultation with an academic advisor in their College. Requests for extension will typically not be considered in cases where a student has a concern related to completed or outstanding coursework or the final exam. In these cases, students should instead address their concern through a special consideration request to the course instructor, a petition, or an academic appeal to the department, as appropriate.
If you have experienced such circumstances and wish to receive more information on requesting an extension to the time to complete the requirements of the CS Admission Guarantee, please contact cs.undergrad@utoronto.ca. If you would like to receive a decision on your request before the beginning of the Fall term, your request must be received no later than June 15 of the year in which you initially began your studies, so you must contact us well in advance of this date in order to request information about the process. Under no circumstances will requests for an extension of the guarantee beyond an additional 12 months of the original deadline be considered, even for requests submitted after June 15.
I did not achieve the required mark in CSC110Y1 (Fall)
Students who do not achieve the Guarantee's required mark in CSC110Y1 may not progress to take CSC111H1 in the Winter term. However, if you are in this situation but still wish to pursue a Computer Science program, there is an alternate path.
If you passed CSC110Y1 but did not achieve the required mark, you may enrol in CSC148H1 and CSC165H1 in the Winter semester and apply for admission to a Computer Science program in the spring at the end of your first year. In this case, the Computer Science Admission Guarantee will no longer apply: you will be considered for admission using the same criteria as all other Arts & Science students, including being required to submit a supplemental application.
If you did not pass CSC110Y1F, you are encouraged to complete CSC108H1 before enrolling in CSC148H1 and CSC165H1 for program admission. This means that you will need to wait an additional year to apply for a Computer Science program, and must enrol in another subject POSt for your second year.
I did not achieve the required mark in CSC111H1 (Winter)
In this case, you may enrol in CSC148H1 and CSC165H1 to apply for a Computer Science program the following year. The Computer Science Admission Guarantee will no longer hold: you will be considered for admission using the same criteria as all other Arts & Science students, including being required to submit a supplemental application.
I did not complete 4.0 credits and/or MAT137Y1/MAT157Y1 by the end of my Winter semester
In this case, you may complete your missing courses during the Summer session of your first year. The CS Admission Guarantee will still apply to you until the end of the summer. You should still request the program on ACORN during the first program request period.
