Associate Chair, Undergraduate Studies and Associate Professor, Teaching Stream Michelle Craig’s work to improve and enhance learning materials in computer science has been internationally recognized.

The new U of T chairs – Alán Aspuru-Guzik, David Fleet, Daniel Roy and Bo Wang – join another eight at U of T who were named among the inaugural group last fall and are all associated with the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence.

Professor Emeritus Geoffrey Hinton has been named one of three recipients of the prestigious A.M. Turing Award – dubbed by some “the Nobel Prize of computing” – for his decades-long work advancing the field of artificial intelligence.

The Association of Computer Machinery, with a membership of more than 100,000, named Toniann Pitassi of the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science as one of 56 fellows for 2018.

The startup Structura received support from UTEST and the Department of Computer Science Innovation Lab, or DCSIL, and is benefitting from being based at the nexus of the Toronto’s burgeoning innovation ecosystem.

Craig is honoured to receive the award. "It’s satisfying to have my work recognized," she says.

Work at U of T is already demonstrating how advances in machine learning can accelerate gains in health, education, communication and quality of life, as well as the importance of educating students to think about the ethics of the technology.

"What I like to tell my students is: Computer science is really the study of how you go from being just the user of technology to creators of technology," says award recipient David Liu, an assistant professor, teaching stream.

Nick Frosst, a researcher at Google Brain in downtown Toronto, didn’t require a master’s degree or PhD to launch a career in artificial intelligence research – all he needed was a chance meeting at a bar in Koreatown.
