Title: 4D Printing in Engineering Design Research: Materials, Methods, and Applications
Presented By: Thomas Lumpe, ETH Zurich

Abstract:
The field of 4D printing has gained considerable interest in the last few years and describes the combination of 3D printing and active materials. By exploiting the responsiveness of these materials to different environmental stimuli, a change in the properties of the printed structures can be triggered, e.g. a change in shape or mechanical behavior. Often the structures transform from an initial simple state to a second more complex state without the need of additional control or actuation, which makes them especially suitable for future applications in areas with limited direct access such as space. This talk will give a general introduction to the field of 4D printing from an engineering point of view, focusing on current materials, manufacturing processes, design methods, and applications.

Biography:
Thomas is a doctoral student at the Engineering Design and Computing (EDAC) laboratory at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the Technische Universität München (TUM), Munich, Germany, focusing on composite lightweight structures and structural optimization for aerospace applications. During his studies, he spent time at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore as an exchange student and completed his master’s thesis at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). As a member of the academic flying club at TUM he further gained practical experience in the development, manufacturing, and flying of lightweight airplanes. His research at ETH focuses on the computational design and optimization of 3D- and 4D-printed multi-material cellular structures and multifunctional metamaterials.
