Impressions of Canada's AI & Data Act and its Implications to Practitioners — MScAC talks

Join us at our first MScAC seminar of the new school year. Hear from Sam Ip, Associate of Technology at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP who will talk through impressions of Canada's first proposed AI and Data Act (Bill C-27) and its related implications to practitioners.

On June 16, 2022, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry tabled Bill C-27, introducing updates to the federal private sector privacy regime and a new law on artificial intelligence (AI). If passed, the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA) would be the first law in Canada regulating the use of AI systems. Against the backdrop of emerging AI regulation, this is a very significant development with implications for not only organizations, but also machine learning scientists, engineers, software developers, product managers, and others that play key roles in organizations that develop, use or make available AI systems. In this talk, Sam will provide the audience with a high-level overview of Canada's First Proposed AI and Data Act and further discuss how it will impact the role of AI practitioners.
