A statement from Eyal de Lara, Professor and Chair, Department of Computer Science:
The Department of Computer Science stands in solidarity with our Iranian community members and everyone impacted by the detainment and death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, and subsequent violent crackdowns on protests, including at Tehran’s Sharif University. Many of our students, faculty and staff are graduates of these universities, and we acknowledge that this is an exceptionally challenging time for them, and for all with personal ties to Iran.
We join with those who have voiced their outrage at these egregious acts. Institutions of higher education must be safe places for open speech and the free exchange of ideas. Speaking out is more important than ever, as government censorship is used to silence protests and conceal ongoing brutality amid escalating violence across Iran. We also reaffirm our unflinching commitment to women's rights and all human rights.
