Graduation Spotlight: Parsa Tajik

Parsa Tajik
University College
Computer Science Specialist

How would you describe your time as an undergrad in computer science at U of T?

Challenging and fruitful. U of T’s CS program is definitely not for the faint of heart. There were many instances when me and my friends had to stay up for long hours and work on difficult projects, deal with back-to-back tests, commute to school, and sometimes work part-time! However, looking back at it all I can safely say that these experiences truly hardened my character.

Tell us about an experience from one of your CS courses that stands out to you.

My favourite CS course at U of T was CSC491 taught by Julian Nadeau. Combined with CSC494, we had a semester to create a “startup” with a detailed business plan and a somewhat demo-able MVP. Although we had a few sleepless nights to be able to deliver the final product on time, I had an amazing experience bringing most of the things that I had learned in the past five years into a single project with a great team.

What U of T memory do you treasure the most?

I was a part of U of T’s Technology Leadership Initiative program’s second cohort. I met some of my best friends through TLI and I have to give a big thanks to Mike McCarthy, Paul Gries and Karen Reid for creating this amazing program. The path of my life definitely changed after TLI and I vividly remember the day when I heard the news that I got in! I’m immensely grateful for having the opportunity to learn from our amazing people and I hope to be able to give back to the future students!

What’s one piece of advice that you would give to incoming students?

Network, make friends, and build meaningful relationships. People that you meet here have the potential to change your life. Be kind and genuine because there will be tough times. However, I promise, it’s all going to be worth it in the end!

What’s next for you?

I’m going to start my Software Engineering career at a fintech company based in San Francisco. I’ll continue to do my software consulting business, Bloorsoft, on the side and who knows, maybe one day I’ll create a proper startup!
