Funding Organizations and Programs

Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI)
The CFI's mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians. Since its creation in 1997, the CFI has committed almost $5.2 billion in support of 6,310 projects at 129 research institutions in 65 municipalities across Canada..

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) mandate is to help make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for the benefit of all Canadians.

Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (MITACS)
The Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex systems, is a Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) for the Mathematical Sciences. MITACS is recognized worldwide as an effective new model for research & development in the mathematical sciences - one that addresses the imperatives of research, education and technology transfer. The Network focuses on developing mathematical solutions, which address issues in the fastest growing sectors of the nation's economy.

Ministry of Research and Innovation
The Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation was established to ensure that Ontario has a focused approach to competing and winning in the marketplace of ideas.

Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE)
The Ontario Centres of Excellence were founded in 1987. The Centres promote the economic development of Ontario through directed research, commercialization of technology and training for highly qualified personnel.

Research and Graduate Institutes or Centers

The Fields Institute
The Fields Institute is a center for mathematical research activity - a place where mathematicians from Canada and abroad, from business, industry and financial institutions, can come together to carry out research and formulate problems of mutual interest.

Knowledge Media Design (KMDI)
The Knowledge Media Design Institute (KMDI), founded in 1995, is a leader in interdisciplinary research and teaching at the University of Toronto. The work of this largely graduate research and teaching institute spans the scientific study of the ways in which media and media technologies shape, and are shaped, by human activity, and the practical work of founding an interdisciplinary nexus for the design of such media.

NSERC Business Intelligence Network (BIN)
The goal of BIN is to create an innovation platform for pre-competitive research in Business Intelligence in Canada. NSERC BIN aims to enhance Canadian buiness competitiveness through the development of intelligent data management and decision-making solutions. The research team consists of 15 investigators at seven universities (University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, Carleton University, Dalhousie University, University of Ottawa, University of Toronto, and University of Waterloo). Investigators are working in partnership with researchers at a number of organizations including SAP Canada Inc., IBM Canada Limited, iAnywhere Solutions Canada Ltd., Palomino System Innovations Inc. and Zerofootprint Inc.

Computing Advocacy

Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
ACM delivers resources that advance computing as a science and a profession. ACM provides the computing field’s premier Digital Library and serves its members and the computing profession with leading-edge publications, conferences, and career resources.

Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS)
The CIPS mandate is IT professionalism. CIPS works to set quality IT standards and practices that will benefit all Canadians.

Computing Research Association (CRA)
The Computing Research Association (CRA) is an association of more than 200 North American academic departments of computer science, computer engineering, and related fields; laboratories and centers in industry, government, and academia engaging in basic computing research; and affiliated professional societies.

Women in Higher Education (WIHE)
Women in Higher Education is a monthly practitioner’s news journal, designed to help women on campus become successful in the world of higher education.

Department of Computer and Mathematical Science, Scarborough Campus, University of Toronto
The faculty consists of over 30 Professors and Lecturers, many of whom are profiled on our website. Research interests among the faculty vary from database and knowledge management to artificial intelligence. IBM Centers for Advanced Studies (CAS)
IBM Centers for Advanced Studies facilitate the exchange of academic research knowledge and real world industry challenges towards enhancing IBM products, processes & services.

Innovations at UofT (IUT)
IUT brings together researchers and businesses to capitalize on the ideas developed at the University of Toronto and the hospitals affiliated with the university, where more than $2 million worth of research is conducted daily. The IUT team advances promising projects in key areas of expertise: Physical Sciences & Engineering, Life Sciences and Information Technology.
