Speaker: Alvin Chin (PhD 2007), Senior Researcher, Machine Learning, BMW Technology Corporation, BMW Group
Abstract: When many PhD graduates are considering what positions to apply for, many consider academia. However, with the huge spike in big data and trends in machine learning and artificial intelligence, many companies are looking to hire PhD graduates as Data Scientists for their expertise, and their thinking. In addition, many researchers aspire to have their work used by the public, and to impact society. Working for a company can help to integrate applied research into product development. Increasingly, research is driving innovation in a company, especially intellectual property, and as differentiation from its competitors.
In this talk, Dr. Chin will discuss his career in industry, working in a corporate research lab as well as working for other companies in applied research. He will discuss the opportunities in industry research, how you can work with academia, how industry research differs from academic research, some tips on how to succeed and how you can have a rewarding career.
