Professor Bianca Schroeder and her colleagues Raghav Lagisetty and Arif Merchant of Google, recently presented at the 14th USENIX File and Storage Technologies conference (FAST). Their paper “Flash Reliability in Production: The Expected and the Unexpected” outlines new findings in on solid-state drive (SSD) reliability.
More and more data is being stored on solid state drives, this data needs to be stored reliably, therefore in order to avoid data loss it's important to understand the failure modes. The research showed that that solid state drive failures look different from what is commonly assumed and that these errors maybe predictable in some instances.
