First-year undergraduate Gu Xiaoyan donates instruments and teaches music to young kids whose parents migrate for work.
He said to Metro News:
“It was very sad. Most of these children suffer from depression and loneliness,” said Xiaoyan, who plays more than 10 music instruments and has composed dozens of songs. “I immediately thought that music could give them some happiness.”
Xiaoyan used $600 he earned from selling his music and giving music lessons to buy 30 ukuleles for a primary school in China this past summer.
He plans to expand his project next year and recruit more volunteers. He says there are more than 40 million 'left-behind' children in China.
