Some of the most recent advances in artificial intelligence
tells us that if the future is not here now, it's coming. And very soon.
U of T computer science alumnus Ilya Sutskever (HBSc 2005, MSc 2007, PhD 2013)
will lead research at OpenAI
– a $1 billion nonprofit dedicated to artificial intelligence research.
Sutskever completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor Geoffrey Hinton, who is widely regarded as the "Godfather of Deep Learning". Together Hinton, Sutskever, and Alex Krizhevsky (HBSc 2007, MSc 2009) co-founded a neural networks company, which was later acquired by Google in 2013.
Researchers at OpenAI will be strongly encouraged to publish their work, whether as papers, blog posts, or code, and any patents will be shared with the world.
The nonprofit was formed with donations from OpenAI’s co-chairs, Sam Altman and Elon Musk and CTO Greg Brockman, as well as Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, Peter Thiel, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Infosys, and YC Research.
