CS Student for a Day Program

Grade 12 students are invited to experience the life of an undergraduate computer science student at the University of Toronto. This is not a class trip -- it's the real deal. Students will come to campus on their own, hang out with a student ambassador, attend a real lecture from an undergraduate course in computer science, and meet students and faculty.

The Student for a Day program will be held this Fall 2011.

Visits will be based around the Bahen Centre for Information Technology (BCIT), 40 St. George Street (map and directions).

The descriptions below will give you a sense of the overall content for each course.

• CSC108, Introduction to Computer Programming:
Structure of computers; the computing environment. Programming in a language such as Python. Program structure: elementary data types, statements, control flow, functions, classes, objects, methods, fields. Lists; searching, sorting and complexity.
This is a course for beginning programmers. Students with prior progamming experience typically skip it and take csc148. Both courses are taught in the Python language. Students go on to study C and Java in second year, and many other languages beyond that.

• CSC148, Introduction to Computer Science:
Abstract data types and data structures for implementing them. Linked data structures. Encapsulation and information-hiding. Object-oriented programming. Specifications. Analyzing the efficiency of programs. Recursion.
This is a course is for students with programming experience in a language such as Python, C++, or Java. It is taught in the Python language. Students go on to study C and Java in second year, and many other languages beyond that.
